Palisades Historic Trail Info

Hello all.

Please download the Palisades Historic Trail info pack. Focus on reading pp. 12- 17 before next week’s (Tuesday, April 5) meeting – EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT HIKING…it’s U.S. History!

Our hike event is set for Saturday, April 9. We plan on meeting at Camp Alpine – Greater NYC Councils (right off the Palisades Interstate Pkwy.) early on Saturday morning (around 8:30am). This is where we will be camping, so overnight gear can be dropped off.

Everyone should bring a light daypack on the hike with your heavy backpack to be left in the trailer at Camp Alpine.

We will then drive to Ft. Lee Historical Park for a short briefing and 1  hour tour (max.) of the museum to answer the scavenger hunt questions.

Then, by 11:00am, we will begin our hike from Ft. Lee back to Camp Alpine on the “Long Trail” which is the upper trail.

Mr. Kohrs’ – “STRONG” suggestions

  • WEAR GOOD HIKING BOOTS that are broken in already…
  • BRING EXTRA SOCKS, BANDAIDS / FIRST AID KITS (blisters do occur)
  • DRESS IN LAYERS
  • BRING WATER / GATORADE
  • BRING BAG LUNCH to be eaten on the trail.
  • SAFETY FIRST – Stay on the trail…No approaching the edge of the Palisades cliffs.

Dinner will be handled when we arrive at Camp Alpine.

I look forward to this really cool event ! See you at our next meeting.

Mr. Kohrs (Ty’s Dad)

Troop Meeting Tomorrow

We will have our green bar meeting starting at 7:00pm. We will have our general meeting starting at 7:30pm.

Tomorrow, we will have a Board of Review for those scouts that passed their Scoutmaster Conference two weeks ago. Please come dressed in your FULL class “A” uniforms.

See you all tomorrow night. Thanks.

Jon Hess – Scoutmaster, Troop 540

CupCake Fundraiser

Troop 540,

We are holding an optional fundraiser which could be used to offset the cost of summer camp (which has gone up!) or other scouting events.

We can sell Cup Cakes from Carousel Cakes for the Easter holiday. They come in six-packs and the suggested price is $18 per package. The scouts would earn $5.00 for each package they sell.

I will find out the deadline for handing in the order and forward the information to you tomorrow.

Maura and I will handle picking up the orders on Tuesday, March 22 and have them available later that day for distribution.

If you are interested in participating, please print out the these forms:

Thank you.

Sue Donahue.

Hike This Saturday

Thanks again to Mr. Hickey for leading the troop on our hike this Saturday to Bull Mine. For those that are going, we will meet at 8:00am SHARP in the South Blooming Grove Fire House parking lot. We will head out at 8:15am SHARP. We will probably be done with the hike by 12:30pm. Please bring backpacks if you have them. You should bring at least 4 bottles of water each, snacks, lunch and maybe an energy bar. You should also wear hiking boots, old clothes, layers (cold in the mine), TWO flashlights per scout or headlamps are great for hands free, work gloves in addition to winter gloves- for holding ropes and climbing rocks.

Mr. Hickey stressed that it is VERY important that we stay on the trail. There are air shafts and such all over the mountain, often hidden by ground brush.

Here is the address:

South Blooming Grove Fire Dept.
819 NY-208, Monroe, NY 10950

See you all on Saturday!

Thanks,

Jon Hess, Scoutmaster – Troop 540
