Troop Updates

Troop 540,

First, I want to say a BIG THANK YOU, on behalf of the troop to Mr. Hickey and Mr. Doering, who took time out of their personal schedules and braved the freezing temperatures to run the rifle range for us yesterday at Nooteeming. Without their presence, this trip would not have been possible and the boys wouldn’t have been able to shoot the rifles at the range. Also, a special thanks to Mr. Hickey for being an integral part of the preparation for the last few months for the troop’s latest Eagle Scouts and also the scouts that are pending for their board of reviews. Walt, I owe you lunch/dinner (your choice), whenever you are available.

We are entering the second half of the scout year. That means it’s time for elections and the next round of merit badges. This Tuesday, you will be voting for your next SPL and there will be a new list of leaders for the troop.

We will start to wrap up the current merit badges in the next couple of weeks. We will start the next round of merit badges in April. If you didn’t complete your current merit badge, you will need to, before you are allowed to start another one. This is part of your own personal management of your time and responsibilities. I will also be looking to the adult volunteers, to see who would like to continue with their current merit badges and who would like to do something else. Please let me know what your intentions are, going forward. Also, please update the merit badge list below with the status for the scouts below.

Some reminders:

Jake’s Fundraiser is tomorrow night. Please invite your friends and families and bring the bring your coupons to help the troop to raise money for the neckerchiefs that we purchased.

Andrew Wasserman will be collecting the Carousel Cakes order forms and money this Tuesday. Please get the checks in on Tuesday for that. Your support will help Andrew to raise money for his upcoming eagle service project.

Camping This Weekend

Troop 540,

We have decided to cut the camping trip short this weekend due to the weather. We will get up to Nooteeming on Friday night by 6:00pm. We will stay over until Saturday. On Saturday morning, we will head to the shooting range from 8:00am until 12:00pm and then depart from the camp at around 12:30-1:00pm.

Plan on doing some work from your scout books on Friday night, so PLEASE bring your scout books.

Plan on eating dinner before you get to the camp on Friday. We’ll have snacks at night and the scouts will be preparing breakfast for Saturday morning.

See you all Friday night at 6:00pm.

For the new scouts, the troop supplies the tents for the scouts. The parents have to supply their own tents.

I have put together a checklist of important items and optional items to bring with you.

Camping Gear

MUST HAVE:

  • Sleeping bag (ZERO DEGREE RATED)
  • Head light with extra batteries
  • Extra sneakers or shoes
  • Mess kit (plate, bowl, and cup)
  • Utensil kit (knife, fork, and spoon)
  • Jacket and/or sweatshirt
  • Winter hat
  • Gloves
  • Sweat suit for sleeping
  • Boy Scout Handbook
  • Pencils or pens
  • Rope
  • Blue jeans or other long pants
  • Socks
  • Underwear
  • Toothbrush
  • Toothpaste
  • Deodorant (NON-AEROSOL)
  • Toilet paper
  • Hand soap in container
  • Hand Warmer packets

OPTIONAL ITEMS

  • Pillow or air pillow
  • Wipes
  • Garbage bag
  • liner, blanket(s), and/or space blanket
  • Foam sleeping pad
  • Compass
  • Folding camp chair
  • Wooden matches in waterproof container
  • Fire starters
  • Pocket knife – NO sheath knives
  • Totin’ Chip card
  • Washcloth
  • towel
  • Hiking boots or other sturdy shoes
  • Watch

Consider clothing and outerwear made of synthetic fabrics (Polypropylene, Thermasilk, Thermax, etc.) which transport moisture and dry quickly, unlike cotton. Long thermal underwear shirts and pants are especially important items to consider made from these fabrics. This will be more important in colder conditions.

Sincerely,

Jon Hess – Scoutmaster, Troop 540

Schedule – Fundraiser

Troop 540,

Just some reminders for this week,

We have our fundraiser next Monday, March 16, at Jake’s Wayback Burgers. Please print out the coupons and give them to your friends and families for tomorrow night. 15% of the sales will go back to the troop.

Also, Andrew Wasserman is having his eagle project fundraiser. Please make sure to sell some Carousel Cakes (use this form) for him and turn in the money by Tuesday, March 17th.

I will see you all this Tuesday. Green bar starts at 7:00pm. The general meeting starts at 7:30pm. We will be camping at Nooteeming this coming weekend. Mr. Hickey, Mr. Doering and Mr. Verdini are all volunteering their time to come up and run the rifle range for the troop. They will meet us up at the range at Nooteeming on Saturday morning. On Tuesday, we will practice setting up tents and assign meals to the younger scouts. We will be camping at the Oneida platform campsite adjacent to the rifle range. Bring your snow shovels, just in case we have to shovel off the platforms. I have attached a map which also includes the address of the campsite. We should plan on getting to the site by 6pm on Friday and have a 7:30am pick up on Sunday.

Please let me know which dads plan on staying with us for this trip. I need to leave early on Sunday and I need some parents to stick around and make sure that everyone gets picked up on.

I can bring the trailer up to camp on Friday. Can I get a volunteer to bring it back on Sunday?

I’ll see you all tomorrow night at Jake’s.

Thanks.

Sincerely,

Jon Hess – Scoutmaster, Troop 540
845-480-4391

Troop Meeting Cancelled

Good Morning Troop 540,

If you could all email me back and let be know how many scouts have completed their requirements, how many are a partial and how many didn’t even start. Thanks. My goal would be to have the merit badges complete in the next month; if possible.

Here are some upcoming dates for future events:
